DP World Hosts PortMiami-Port of Callao Sister Port Agreement

Agreement strengthens cooperation between two major trade gateways in the Americas through information sharing, technical collaboration, and joint efforts to support cargo connectivity

CALLAO, Peru, Oct. 05, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- DP World hosted the signing of an International Sister Seaports Agreement between PortMiami and the Port of Callao, strengthening cooperation between two strategically important trade gateways connecting North and South America with global markets.

The agreement was signed on September 23, 2026, by Jonathan Daniels, Director and CEO of PortMiami, and Abel Alvarado Huertas, President of the National Port Authority of Peru, establishing a framework for commercial, technical and institutional collaboration between the two ports.

Under the agreement, PortMiami and the Port of Callao will exchange information and expertise on cargo and cruise activity, trade data, planned port infrastructure developments, and market research. The ports will also explore opportunities for joint initiatives that promote cargo and port activity, establish technical working groups, and facilitate educational visits.

Strengthening Trade Connections Across the Americas

PortMiami serves as an important U.S. gateway for trade with Latin America and the Caribbean, while the Port of Callao is Peru's principal maritime gateway and a critical connection between South America and international markets.

The agreement will enable the two port communities to share best practices and identify opportunities to strengthen trade connectivity between Peru and the US.

Jonathan Daniels, Director and CEO, PortMiami, said: “PortMiami and the Port of Callao share an important role as gateways connecting businesses and communities to global markets. Renewing our Sister Seaports partnership creates new opportunities to exchange expertise, strengthen commercial ties and identify ways to grow cargo connectivity between Florida, Peru and the broader Americas.”

Abel Alvaredo Huertas, President, National Port Authority of Peru, said: “This agreement reinforces the strong relationship between the Port of Callao and PortMiami and our shared commitment to advancing efficient, competitive and sustainable port development. Through greater collaboration and knowledge exchange, we can strengthen our respective port communities while creating new opportunities for trade between Peru and the United States.”

Carlos Merino, CEO of DP World in Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru, said: “Callao plays a central role in connecting Peru’s businesses and exporters with global markets. By bringing PortMiami and the Port of Callao together at DP World Callao, we are helping strengthen the relationships, knowledge and international connections that support Peru’s trade. We are pleased to host this agreement and continue contributing to Callao’s development as one of the region’s leading trade gateways.”

The signing ceremony was held at DP World's terminal at the Port of Callao, where the company has operated since 2006 and invested nearly US$1 billion to expand capacity and strengthen Peru’s connections to global trade.

In 2024 alone, the terminal supported an estimated US$23.6 billion in economic activity across the country. Today, DP World Callao has annual handling capacity of approximately 2.7 million TEUs and serves as a critical gateway within DP World’s broader logistics network in Peru.

The ceremony included representatives from PortMiami, the National Port Authority of Peru, and other trade and business stakeholders.
